🏛️ 5th Grade Colonial Day

Step back in time! Colonial Day gives our 5th grade students the chance to experience what life was like in Colonial America through a full day of hands-on learning and historical fun. This exciting event complements the 5th grade social studies curriculum by bringing American history to life beyond the classroom.

Throughout the day, students rotate through a variety of interactive Colonial-era stations in small groups called “families.” Each station introduces students to aspects of daily life in the late 18th century, including crafts, music, games, and other hands-on activities that make history engaging and memorable.

To help create an immersive Colonial experience, students, teachers, and volunteers are encouraged to dress in Colonial-era clothing (colonial garb) for the day.

COSTUMES

To help get into the spirit of the day, everyone is encouraged to dress in Colonial-era costume.

  • Boys: Breeches, high stockings/socks, and loose-fitting shirts with waistcoats (long vests with buttons). This look can be easily created using baseball pants, rolled-up loose pants, or long shorts paired with high socks (such as soccer or baseball socks). A loose cotton shirt, vest, and tricorne hat complete the outfit.
  • Girls: Long dresses made of wool, linen, or cotton were commonly worn with several layers underneath. Aprons were often worn over dresses to protect garments, and mop caps, straw hats, or lace doilies were used to cover their heads. To achieve this look, a long full skirt with a loose blouse or a floor-length dress works well. Shawls and aprons are great accessories.
  • If your child prefers not to wear a traditional costume, another option is to dress in red, white, and blue.

🙋 Parent Volunteers Bring Colonial Day to Life

Colonial Day wouldn’t be possible without the help of parent volunteers who run the activity stations and help guide students through the day’s adventures.

Volunteers may:

  • Set up and run a Colonial activity booth

  • Lead students through hands-on crafts, games, or demonstrations

  • Help guide student “families” between stations

  • Assist teachers in keeping the day running smoothly

Your involvement helps create an interactive and unforgettable day of historical discovery for our students.
