PTO MythBusters
There are a lot of misconceptions about what it means to join or participate in the PTO. Let’s clear up a few of the most common ones.
❌ MYTH #1
I don’t have enough time to join the PTO.
✅ FACT
Joining the PTO does not require a major time commitment.
Membership is simply a way to support the programs, events, activities, and enrichment opportunities the PTO provides throughout our schools.
You can participate as much or as little as your schedule allows.
❌ MYTH #2
If I join the PTO, I have to attend meetings or volunteer all the time.
✅ FACT
There is no meeting requirement and no required number of volunteer hours.
Some members attend meetings. Some volunteer at events. Some help behind the scenes. Some simply support the PTO through their annual membership.
Every level of participation is valuable.
❌ MYTH #3
The PTO is just a group of friends, and I won’t feel like I belong.
✅ FACT
The PTO is for all parents, guardians, teachers, and staff in the Long Hill Township School District.
You do not need to already know anyone, have previous PTO experience, or be part of a particular group.
New ideas, new volunteers, and new faces are always welcome.
❌ MYTH #4
I can only help if I’m available during the school day.
✅ FACT
Volunteer opportunities vary throughout the year.
Some take place during the school day, while others happen in the evening, at special events, behind the scenes, or can sometimes be completed from home.
We know families have different schedules and commitments, and we appreciate any time you are able to give.
❌ MYTH #5
My PTO membership doesn’t really make a difference.
✅ FACT
It absolutely does.
PTO membership helps support student programs, assemblies, enrichment opportunities, grade-level activities, staff appreciation, community events, and other initiatives throughout our schools.
Every membership helps strengthen what the PTO is able to provide.
